Realtv were formed in 1994 from the ashes of local heros Garp and NME darlings back to the planet. Initially formed by Jay Butler & Fraggle whilst touring together, the band sought to be an eclectic mix of punk / rock / dance influenced by bands such as the Cardiacs, Compulsion, Faith no more, Sex pistols etc.
They played their first ever live show at the Army & Navy Christmas 94. That show gained the group their first glowing review in the NME and made the line up of Jay Butler (vocals) Fraggle (guitar) Johhny nightingale (bass) Kieron Pepper (drums) and Robin Earland (keys) permanent. The group toured extensively over the next 4 years touring continually in the uk and Europe supporting bands such as The Wildhearts, CIV, Feeder, Done Lying Down, A, Rub Ultra, Dub War and many others as well as headlining their own tours.
Gaining extensive press coverage in NME, Kerrang and Metal Hammer the band released 2 singles (Channel Hate & are we having fun yet?) along with a mini album ‘Now wash your hands’ to favourable reviews and indie chart placings.
Their explosive live shows (being cited as ‘the most exciting live punk band since Nirvana’ in the NME) and years of touring gained the band a fanatical following and secured them a prestigious spot at The Phoenix festival 97 alongside Faith No More.
The band amicably split later that year and all members went on to other projects, notably Kieron Pepper to play drums for The Prodigy and Jay Butler to sing for BritRock ‘supergroup’ Grand Theft Audio’.
